About The Shed Registry
The Shed Registry is the free NYC scaffolding registry for building managers, built as a public directory from permit data published by the NYC Department of Buildings.
Why This Exists
New York City has over 8,400 active sidewalk sheds. Under Local Law 48 of 2025 (effective January 26, 2026), shed permits expire every 90 days and idle sheds face escalating fines up to $6,000 per month. Building managers need a buyer-side source of truth to compare contractors based on data, not sales pitches.
Data Sources
Contractor records are sourced from the NYC Open Data Sidewalk Sheds dataset, published by the Department of Buildings. Business contact details are cross-referenced against Google Maps listings. The registry is not affiliated with NYC DOB or any government agency.
For a detailed breakdown of how we process and verify contractor data, see our methodology page.
How It Works
- We pull permit records from NYC Open Data to identify every contractor with sidewalk shed permits.
- We aggregate permit volumes, active boroughs, and job histories for each contractor.
- We cross-reference business details (phone, address) against Google Maps listings.
- Building managers can search the directory and use the registry to compare contractors with publicly sourced data.
